Customs Information
PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED GOODS
Goods prohibited from entering Poland include weapons, narcotics, drugs or pornographic materials, and pets other than cats and dogs.
To import alcohol in excess of 1 liter, an import license is required, which in practical terms, is impossible to get. Therefore do not ship alcohol to Poland.
CUSTOMS REGULATIONS
HOUSEHOLD GOODS AND PERSONAL EFFECTS
For eligible foreigners taking up residence for more than six months, there are no customs duties or taxes collected on the importation of genuine household goods and personal effects but this is subject to the ultimate re-exportation of all durable items. It would include domestic appliances, cars, and other higher-value items brought in non-commercial quantities. Generally, one of each item would be admitted without payment of tax and duty. These items are, in fact, not exempt, and Polish Customs generally require security for duty and VAT as calculated on the declared value of the possessions. This security is usually in the form of a Bank Guarantee, but could, of course, be cash.
The above reservations do not concern diplomats and/or accredited journalists.
DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED FROM THE ORIGIN
The normal numbered inventory prepared by the moving company during packing is required. It must be fully descriptive (no P.B.O.s) and should list serial numbers of all electrical items and be faxed over (both air and sea) for translation to Polish as soon as available. If the shipper prepared a valued insurance inventory, this should also be faxed. Returning Polish Nationals should get the appropriate documentation from the nearest Polish Consulate.
Universal Express will work closely with the shipper in Poland to secure the appropriate paperwork, which might include any of the following depending on the shipper’s status: copy of relevant pages of passport, shipper’s original work permit (which must be valid for at least 6 months at the time of clearance), standard letters in Polish on employer’s letterhead addressed to Customs (requesting clearance, etc.), certificates from Ministers, company registrations, etc. Shippers must provide notarized (in Poland) power of attorney for Universal Express.
ITEMS MADE BEFORE 1945 AND PAINTINGS
All such items must be clearly marked on the inventory, loaded for easy access at customs inspection, and have photos supplied to us in duplicate. Pre-1945 books must be listed by title, author, and date of publication.

For import customs clearance of a car, original title, original registration, and original bill of sale (if new) are necessary, along with the other import documentation required for household goods. In the case of returning Polish citizens, please note a car must be used and registered at its origin at least six months before importation to Poland.
